About me:
I am a climate scientist whose research focuses on understanding Antarctic and Arctic sea ice variability, the drivers behind extreme sea ice loss events, and how these changes influence the global climate system. My work combines large climate model ensembles, satellite observations, and statistical methods to investigate the mechanisms controlling sea ice behaviour and its predictability on seasonal to decadal timescales.
Before starting my PhD, I gained experience working with animal tracking and movement ecology data during my MSc in Oceanography at the University of Southampton, where I analysed tracking datasets from marine predators to understand foraging distribution and environmental drivers of habitat use. This experience introduced me to the broader field of polar ecology and developed my interest in how physical ocean processes interact with marine wildlife.
Alongside my research, I serve as the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Representative for AntClimNow and Social Media Officer for the UK Polar Network, supporting and connecting early-career polar scientists globally. I also contribute to teaching in natural sciences and climate modules at Exeter.
In addition to my academic work, I run an educational YouTube channel where I create content on climate science, polar research, global heritage sites, and history. If you are interested, you can check it out at https://www.youtube.com/@phdbonbon2025
